The 2012 theme is “Heat”. Think “Heart of Darkness”, “Wide Sargasso Sea”, “Firestarter”. Hot, steamy, passionate. Pyromaniacs. The Tropics. Mercury. This year’s theme allows for a wide variety of subject matter. We’re looking forward to seeing what you all come up with! While entries for the short story competition can be on any topic, the review gets its cohesion from stories, poems and artwork focusing on a central theme.

You are invited to check out the latest Momaya Press innovation, our 2009 Virtual Awards Ceremony. This year instead of our usual physical event, we asked authors to share their thoughts on what inspired them to write their story, their reaction to receiving recognition from Momaya Press, and their future plans on writing. We also have Kay Peddle, Assistant Editor at Random House, writing on the winning story. Don’t miss out – settle down with a cup of coffee and spend some time with us online.

(1) Momaya Short Story Competition Deadline is 30th April 2009

Momaya Press is extending an invitation to any writers you think may be interested in publishing a short story. This year is our 6th annual competition.

Momaya Press sponsors a Short Story Competition to bring fresh writing to the attention of qualified judges. Submit your short story (2,500 word limit) by 30 April 2009 in order to compete for prize money and publication in the Momaya Annual Review 2009. The judges are Alison Hennessey, Editor at Random House; Andy Callus, Copy Editor for Reuters; Nina Steiger, Writers’ Centre Director at Soho Theatre; Matt Allen, a freelance journalist.

Submission details at: www.momayapress.com/contest.htm

(2) Photos from the Momaya Press Awards Ceremony 2008

On 25th November 2008, Momaya Press hosted our 5th annual awards ceremony. The evening featured readings of winning stories, words of inspiration from authors and judges, and original music. Writing is typically a solitary affair and opportunities to share writing communally are rare. We were glad to demonstrate the international nature of our competition which generates submissions from writers around the globe and thank those who joined us on the evening.

Five years is a nice round figure, a significant anniversary that we are proud to mark, and an opportunity for us to reflect. We started in the hope that we could make a contribution to the world – that we could encourage people read and write short stories, and help people take time to appreciate substance over the culture of consumerism that permeates every aspect of our life – and especially our leisure time. In the past five years we’ve received 924 entries from 39 countries and we look forward to receiving even more in the next five years!

(3) Momaya Annual Review 2008 Available for Purchase

The Momaya Annual Review 2008 contains some of the finest writing of the year, complimented by poems and photography. We thank the writers, artists, judges, and others who have supported our project to promote the short story as an art form, both as readers and writers. The theme was “passion” and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the reading.

The Momaya Annual Review 2008 is available for purchase through our site: http://www.momayapress.com/store.htm
