(1) Momaya Press Awards Ceremony 2007

On 15th December 2007, Momaya Press hosted our annual awards ceremony in the United States for the first time at Hygeia in New Milford, Connecticut. The evening featured readings of winning stories, words of inspiration from authors and judges, and original music. Writing is typically a solitary affair and opportunities to share writing communally are rare. We were glad to demonstrate the international nature of our competition which generates submissions from writers around the globe and thank those who joined us on the evening.

We were pleased to receive 2007 entries from sixteen diverse countries: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Israel, Kenya, The Netherlands, South Africa, St Vincent and the Grenadines, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. We encourage people to submit wherever in the world they may be, or whoever they may be. Our judges do not see the name or contact information of the authors; they see just the title and text of the story when they choose the winners.

We would like to thank the judges who support Momaya Press and our mission to promote the short story. Three judges comprised the 2007 panel: Lucy Alexander, Alison Hennessey, and Claire Nozières. Lucy Alexander is a writer and researcher at The Times Magazine. Lucy was a PR account manager at Freud Communications before becoming a journalist. Alison Hennessey is an Assistant Editor at Random House. Claire Nozières works at Andrew Nurnberg Associates as a literary agent. Previously she was Foreign Rights Manager at Frances Lincoln, an independent publishing house specialized in high quality illustrated books and children’s books. Claire sells translations rights to France for a wide-ranging list of contemporary US and UK fiction. Alison Hennessey has worked in publishing for five years, and is now an Editor at Random House. She also works as a freelance reader for a literary consultancy.

(2) You may now pre-order your copy of the Momaya Annual Review 2007 at http://www.momayapress.com/store.htm

The 2007 theme of transformation proved to be fertile ground for our writers imaginations. While entries for the short story competition were welcome on any fictional topic, the review gets its cohesion from stories, poems and artwork on this central theme. The short stories in this collection express the theme from the literal (a la Kafka) to the cerebral (the transition from childhood to adulthood). Overall, these stories highlight the power of transformation to change how we think of ourselves, others, and the world around us.

You will not see the work published here elsewhere. We encourage you to share this anthology with friends, families, and writer. You may also purchase previous year’s editions on the website. We hope that our publication will inspire writers to write even more, and readers to put pen to paper.

(3) The Momaya Short Story Competition 2008 is now accepting submissions at http://www.momayapress.com/contest.htm.

The theme for this year is passion. It inspires, it creates, it infuriates, it rages, it loves, it lusts, it hungers, it satisfies. Passion is the fuel of life. This year’s theme examines passion on all levels, all manifestations.

Passion can take us where we want to go or get in the way, it can exhilarates or exhaust. It’s not just about passion for people, but work, hobbies, joys and hates. It may come upon us suddenly, or so quietly we don’t notice what’s transpired until the moment is past. Think Dostoevsky’s “Brothers Karamazov,” Nabokov’s “Lolita,” Thoreau’s “On Golden Pond.”

Past Momaya Themes:
2007 Transformation
2006 Escape
2005 Humour
2004 Food

We invite you to join the crusade to promote the short story to readers and writers worldwide by participating as a reader/writer in the Momaya Short Story Competition and Momaya Annual Review.

Every year the Momaya Annual Review has a different theme. While entries for the short story competition can be on any fictional topic, the review gets its cohesion from stories, poems and artwork on a central theme, interspersed amongst the contest winners’ stories. The 2007 Annual Review will feature fiction in a variety of categories from the winners of the Momaya Short Story Competition and winners of Momaya Awards, as well as a stunning collection of photographs, poems and short stories exploring “Transformation”.

(3) Spread the world – the 2007 Momaya Short Story Competition is open. This year’s theme is Transformation. We’ve all experienced it at some time, whether we wanted to or not: Life is change. The universe is in constant flux. This year’s theme examines change and transformation on all levels, all planes.

Transformation can be subtle or obvious, exhilarating or sad. It may come upon us suddenly, or so quietly we don’t notice what has transpired until the moment is past. Think Kafka’s “Metamorphoses,” Gogol’s “The Nose,” Vonnegut’s “Galapagos.” Or on a simpler level: childbirth, divorce, growing up, death, or even simpler, a haircut. A moment when our definitions change, when we transcend ourselves and emerge as someone new: “As good As It Gets,” “Steel Magnolias,” “Bend It Like Beckham.”

(1) Recap of the Momaya Press Awards Ceremony 2005
(2) Momaya Short Story Competition 2006 – Now Open!

(1) Recap of the Momaya Press Awards Ceremony 2005

Writers, judges, and readers packed out the London Review Bookshop at the 2 December 2005 Momaya Press Awards Ceremony. Writers shared their inspiration for particular stories and their plans for their writing in the future. Last year’s winners discussed how their winning of the competition has inspired them to take the next step in their literary career – including writing a comic novel and entering/winning over 15 competitions in a single year! It was uplifting to see the impact that Momaya has had on readers and writers alike, and we hope that the readers of this newsletter will consider entering the Momaya Short Story Competition 2006 and attending this year’s prize ceremony.

You may view photos and quotes from the Momaya Awards Ceremony 2005 at www.momayapress.com/2005awards.htm.

(2) Momaya Short Story Competition 2006 – Now Open!

Stories can be submitted on any topic, but there is a special focus on Escape. The top 10 winners of the Short Story Competition and an additional selection of stories focusing on “Escape” will be printed in the Momaya Annual Review 2006.

Escape is a theme common to us all. Sometimes we long to escape a boring job, a loveless marriage, and distressed family situation. Sometimes we need to escape a prison, a repressive regime, a burning building. Escape can be dramatic, funny, dangerous, exciting, traumatic. Think of “Kavalier and Clay” by Michael Chabon, “Empire of the Sun” by J. G. Ballard, “Vernon God Little” – by D B C Pierre, “The Handmaiden’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. We look forward to reading your own tales.

Short stories of up to 2,500 words can be submitted at www.momayapress.com/contest.htm.

(2) Momaya Press Deadline Extended – 30 June 2005
(3) Ideas for Next Year’s Competition

(1) Read This and Write

Momaya Press is profiled in the June 2005 edition of the Harvard Business School Alumni Magazine. The text of the article read as follows.

“If you are capable of reading this article, you are capable of writing a short story,” says Monisha Saldanha Koruth (MBA ’01), cofounder and director of London’s Momaya Press, dedicated to the promotion and publication of short stories. Koruth, a manager at an Internet development services firm, publishes an annual short- story review, sponsors a short-story competition, and organizes theatrical performances adapted from stories. “Our goal is to create a friendly, nonthreatening forum that will encourage people to both write and read short stories,” she says. “A short story can be written in an afternoon or a weekend. We all have stories to tell, and it is a thing of beauty to share your mind with the world.” For this year’s competition (deadline June 30), Koruth welcomes submissions at www.momayapress.com

View the online edition of the article at:
