Still looking for some inspiration for your entry to the The Momaya Press Short Story 2013 Competition? We’re accepting entries on any topic related to music (deadline: 30 April 2013).

Here are some ideas:

People around the world have been using music for millenia to alter their states of consciousness and enter trance-states. Imagine the young shaman, training with a rattle or drum, learning new chants, the power that the music would hold in his mind, the doors it could unlock. Or, what if the power and beauty  of someone’s voice held the key to changing anyone and everyone’s mind? What if every word they sang would be followed as an order?



About the author


Maya Cointreau received a degree in Russian Literature from Smith College in 1996 and has over 18 years of experience in publishing and graphic arts. She has written and published eight fiction and non-fiction books, and was managing editor of DCC Magazine, a magazine with a circulation of more than 60,000 readers. She works as an artist and author from her studio in Connecticut. Her writing can be found at
